Established in 1977 and sponsored by Bank of America, the Chicago Marathon is one of the six events of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. Due to the logistics of holding a major road-based event in the city, the race is limited to 45,000 runners who must finish within six hours and 30 minutes. The event operates with a rolling time limit: mile-long segments are reopened to the public at 15 minute intervals after the last start time.
Although Chicago Marathon participants must complete the race individually, with no relay teams, runners may choose to raise money through the charity program, which also grants runners a guaranteed entry. By choosing one of the official affiliated charities, which include the American Red Cross, Ronald McDonald House, the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, and Save the Children, runners agree to raise a specific minimum amount for charity. The charity program also grants participants special entry deadlines that depend on the sponsorship level of the specific charity.
