In The Corner: Coding For Beginners

Before I begin, what does it even mean to “code”? If you are like me and have absolutely no experience in computer science, it’s probably a term you’ve heard over and over again. So, here goes my layman’s attempt at a definition — Coding is basically telling a computer what to do. A coder or programmer (we are not going to get into this) writes code in a language that the computer understands. These languages include Python, JavaScript, SQL, PHP and more. That said, I’m not here to give you a lesson on Coding, I’m here to tell you about the resources that can.

One of the many things I love about the Corner are the various self-learning activities that the members engage in. I am always interested in what they are working on, it’s eye-opening to see the amount of information that’s out there. Adebayo is a member of the Corner, he has a B.Sc in Library and Information Science an M.Sc in Indigenous Knowledge and Development and absolutely no knowledge in Coding — that is, until he came across Codecademy.

Codecademy is an online platform that offers coding classes for free. Adebayo has been taking classes on Python since late July and describes his experience as being positive. “I like that it is interactive, comprehensive and self-paced. It has been extremely beneficial to me in learning how to code using Python. I haven’t completed my modules yet but I’ve learned so much already.”

I chose to focus this post on Codecademy because it’s popular in the Corner and also beginner friendly. However, there are other free online platforms that offer coding classes for free, which include - Free Code Camp, Khan Academy and more.

“The Corner” refers to the American Corner at CcHUB. Register to become a member here (it’s free!). Check us out on Twitter and Facebook.
