Are You Doing First Things First?
Take the right next step!
The other day I was sitting with one of my team leads and she did not know how to cope with her work load. She was planning to work the weekend to keep on top of things.
I asked her whether she had progressed on hiring the new team member to help her manage the increasing work load? She said that she did not have time to talk to her and she would not have time anyway to onboard her.
I asked her what her plan was to get her work load issue under control. That got her thinking.
This is quite common. Instead of resolving the problem, people tend to fight the symptoms.
Maybe you want to move ahead with your career? Maybe you want to improve your team’s performance, your sales numbers, or you want to start a business? Or you want to spend more time with your family.
No matter what it is. You need to think about the most important action that will get you one step closer to your goal.
It s a Journey and not a Silver Bullet
Now that you have decided to go for the next right step another problem is waiting. I think that is where actually the even bigger problem starts. Everyone is looking for the silver bullet, the one key action that gets you there. So again for everyone:
There is no magic bullet!
There is no magic bullet!
There is no magic bullet!
You can play Lotto but we all know the odds to win that.
I am sure you read this a million times and think ‘What’s new!’. But that is the reason why I repeat this because people do not want to believe this.
They keep looking for shortcuts and they give up too early.
So instead of calling that potential customer or talking to that person about the new idea they rather do some more research and background reading or prepare another presentation or think about it.
Not sure about your goal or the best next step?
If you actually do not know what is the most important next step then ask an expert in the field that has proven experience and does not charge you.
An example, say you want to sell a specific product on amazon because you think it might be a good idea. There are tools and ways how to research that. Check with your friends if they know someone that sells on amazon. Or contact some of successful sellers and explain them what you plan to do. Ask on Quora who gives best advice on the topic. You will find a few contacts. Ask them how to go about it and then take your next steps.
But please beware of Amateurs and so called Experts
Try not to ask people who have no idea about the topic. They will give you an opinion but not based on any experience. That is very dangerous, about as solid as the advice you get in a bar when everyone is the world’s best football coach. Plus everyone usually has an opinion on everything.
