Ah, I do see where you’re coming from. And yes, historically “professional” jobs have treated their workers far better. However, this has broken down somewhat in the last five years or so, particularly in technology. Long hours are the norm, job security is poor, and if you live in SF or NYC, the munificent salaries won’t really let you save money or buy a house.

But you’re basically right. This resentment comes from losing a privilege — good jobs for fair pay. Those who never had that privilege aren’t going to be as upset as those who had it snatched away from them.
