Passengers // Film Review

Passengers is a science fiction film directed by Morten Tyldum(Director of The Imitation Game). It stars Chris Pratt as Jim and Jenifer Lawrence as Aurora. Chris Pratt was a great pick to play Jim however I do not think the same of Jenifer Lawrence with Aurora, her performance felt weak and almost ‘basic’. I feel that with her role it would have been better to get a lesser known actress.

The climax of this film was obvious from 5 minutes in but there were still some surprising moments. However, I do feel that for such an expensive set, the plot did lack. It was like they relied on making it look so nice that you would forget the story sucks.

Basic Plot

5000 passengers are in hibernation while they are being transported to a new planet to colonize. This is done by a commercial company and it is mentioned that this isn’t the first planet to be colonized. Part way into the 120 year journey Jim is woken up by a malfunction in the system. He spends over a year alone on the ship with no way to ask for help from the ships crew or from earth.

As Jim is on the brink of losing his mind, he finds Aurora. This is where the main bulk of the story begins as more things start to malfunction while Jim and Aurora try to find out why.

Directors Decisions

The music used in the film was perfect and well timed. It always complimented to the situation and never distracted or felt out of place. I did not notice any amazing camera work or use of lighting and color but that isn’t to say there wasn’t any.

Final Thoughts

Passengers was an interesting take on a space film but I do feel that with the CGI and set used, the plot could have been so much better. Overall I think it deserves a 6.5/10

There were many good moments and a couple of emotional parts, but it isn’t enough to make the story any good.
