Filmmakers. We’re like paranoid snowflakes. All completely different, and yet we tend to be quickly suspicious about those around us. So when it comes to shouting about our own projects, we’re screaming our lungs out, but when it comes to the movies of our peers, more often than not, radio silence. Well, I’ve got news for you; we need to get out the support.
When it comes to making movies, we’ve chosen easily the hardest gig possible to try and make a name for ourselves. I’ve said it before, I had some tough lessons to learn on the route from being a dreamer to, you know, having actual feature length movies in the bank. But all the time, I never lost sight of the fact that really, this was a race of one. The only person we need to be better than is ourselves on the last movie we made.
Watching ruefully as our friends and peers win the awards we wanted, or get the distribution deals we’ve hankered after is not good for anybody. Look, if you did something congrats. And if somebody you know did something, well, they deserve the shout-outs too. After all, all boats rise on the same tide, right?
So if you’ve shot something, talk about it. But also talk about the other filmmakers you know as well. And I mean like really talk about them. Tell your friends just why you think their so goddamn awesome, and they’ll (hopefully) do the same.
So I’m challenging you — for every time you post about your own work on Twitter, Facebook and more, make the conscious effort to share two other films. I know that might feel like you’re running the risk of pissing off everybody in your networks, but trust me, spreading the word on the work of others has got to be ten times better than some of the ‘you’ll never guess what happened next’ crap clogging up the internet.
And if you’re reading this and saying ‘hey, I already do that’, well you’re awesome and your social media friends and followers are (likely) getting a rich and interesting stream and you’re (probably) considered a bastion of good taste.
So feel free to Tweet me links to your movies and I’ll happily send them onto my networks. And I hope you’ll do the same for your peers. After all, sharing is caring, and marketing can be damn expensive.
Other broke indie filmmakers are not your competition; they’re your compadres.
