A few people have asked for this letter I wrote to Harman in a copy & pastable form. I hope it’s useful and hasn’t been overtaken by events.
I am writing as a Labour member in Peckham and Camberwell to request that you fully support Jeremy Corbyn in the coming months.
Jeremy won a very significant mandate from the party membership and efforts from MPs to undermine him would certainly exacerbate what already feels like a very unfortunate and unproductive disconnection between ordinary members and the PLP. I would also like to add that I, and I believe many other members, were extremely impressed by Jeremy during the EU referendum and his consistent refusal, unlike many MPs, to scapegoat migrants. This principled behaviour is the only hope that some of the poison may be drawn out of the current situation.
A united Labour Party led by Jeremy Corbyn offers us the best chance of ensuring that the way in which the UK exits the EU does the least possible harm to ordinary people living in the UK and will ensure that we are prepared for the real possibility of a snap general election. Under Jeremy’s leadership Labour in Parliament have, by genuinely opposing the Conservative government, won victories on issues like tax credits or Personal Independence Payments, in a similar way and with the Conservatives in disarray a decisive Labour opposition may be able to ameliorate some of the worst consequences of Brexit. Moreover in a situation in which a snap General Election is a distinct possibility a united Labour Party is absolutely vital.
Plotting against Jeremy Corbyn at this time is grossly irresponsible both for the Labour Party itself and for the most vulnerable people in the UK, it also shows contempt for the party membership, who elected him and continue to support him overwhelmingly, I hope you will have no part of it.
