In the era of tangible assets, it was easy to calculate return-on-investment. In the era of intangible assets, it is much trickier. The idea of tracing an investment by isolating the perceptual equity drivers it generates - and the sorts of specific behavior it compels - then measuring the financial contribution of the investment is fairly new. Yahoo knows where it stands with the sign. Some of its other investments, not so much.
