The mission of the Global Institute for IT Management (GIIM) is to impart a complete, flexible, and immediately actionable set of best practices by an international group of over 250 prominent academics, practitioners, and management consultants, to prepare IT thought leaders and business executives for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The institute provides a comprehensive set of 32 IT management certificates, with the appropriate balance of academic rigor and practical relevance and with each frequently considered as being the single most important educational experience in the attendees’ professional life.

The courses within the 32 respective certificates are delivered face-to-face (online is available) in concert with affiliate IT management associations, individual company groups/cohorts, or universities (where Masters Degrees can also be awarded). The learning opportunities are in close proximity to the job, on a just-in-time basis, and integrated into the clients broader learning and development objectives. We partner with our clients to deliver the right solutions to meet their education objectives.

After launching our initial offerings in 2012 with about 100 candidates/students, GIIM is primed to have well over 1,000 candidates (IT and non-IT) participating in programs this year. Enrollments are growing exponentially since we expanded our successful face-to-face programs with our asynchronous web program delivery.

The digital transformation encompassing analytics, big data, IoT, RPA, cognitive computing, Cloud, etc., is well underway. However, besides not being well understood from a technical perspective, the implications on industry and society as a whole are still unclear; albeit it will be (is) profound.

Transformation, like any change, tends not to be something that people embrace. In addition, with transformation inclined to be a more radical/revolutionary change, it is likely to be more discomforting or perhaps even painful. Most assuredly these changes do not occur overnight and, and like the impact of previous IT driven transformations (e.g., databases, PCs, client/server, web, social/mobile, etc.) their implications take time, differ across geographies/cultures, and during the early stages not known.

The primary objective of GIIM, and what differentiates us from other education initiatives, is our focus on the important management, leadership, business, industry, and interpersonal skills necessary to ensure the transformation occurs more smoothly, with emphasis on preparing IT and non-IT professionals for the digital transformation.

Digitization (the intelligent connection of people, process, data, and things) is key to how organizations will foster innovation and maintain their competitiveness. This digital transformation will continue to expand exponentially.

- These changes are driving the demand for the global labor market to also transform. IT is changing every industry and every job at an unprecedented pace. Technology skills including how best to leverage them is more essential than ever. Unfortunately the existing global education (and training) system is not preparing candidates with the appropriate skills required to meet the growing demand.

- John Chambers, Chairman of Cisco, estimates:

. by 2020 more than one-third of the core skill sets of most occupations will consist of skills that are not considered critical to today’s jobs, resulting in severe shortages.

. 90% of all new jobs in the future will require technical skills

. 65% of children entering primary schools today will be working in jobs that do not yet exist.

- If the education system does not address this conundrum quickly, the digital divide will be intensified.

IT & non-IT executives are just not prepared!!!

As you view the flight of the starling birds in the video below, think about the implications it has on your organization. In addition to the leadership and organizational harmony that is apparent, consider the underlying communications/trust, demonstrable value and power in working cohesively, governance/rules, collaboration/partnership, and the locus of power and cultural synchronization that are ALL fundamental to their success. These are also the attributes of an effective/efficient IT-business relationship that are essential in today’s dynamic environment driven by the digital transformation; they are the focus of the programs provided by GIIM.

The world is going through profound change. Never have we experienced so many challenges going on concurrently in our eco system (e.g., business environment). These business changes in concert with the dramatic changes in information technologies demand having more than a strategy for robotics process automation (Cognitive Computing), IoT (internet of things), Bring-Your-Own-Infrastructure, and SMAC (Social, Mobile, Business Analytics, and Cloud). Having a strategy for the integration / convergence of these technologies is also insufficient. What is required is having a strategy that integrates these technologies across the entire enterprise, including how best to source them; IT-business alignment is essential.

While there is always risk with these complex initiatives, the biggest risk (often overlooked) is to not have suitable strategies and plans to deploy them. To be successful in this ever increasing dynamic world demands an appropriate balance of technical, management, leadership, business, industry, and interpersonal skills, especially as we see the global increase in enterprises leveraging IT to generate revenues. These proficiencies are required by internal IT managers and staff as well as service providers and consultants. Just as important is the demand to prime non-IT executives with the skills that they require to ensure that their organizations are properly engaged. These are clearly game-changing transformational times for those that are ready.
