“A stitch in time saves nine” — 1723

The quote was recorded in a book from the 17th century. It was a sewing reference whose meaning transcended beyond the helming of seams. In layman's terms, the adage simply calls us to immediate action.

What does it mean to save time? This week was yet another reminder that time waits for nobody. A Big Brother Nigeria star died in an automobile accident that left Nigeria's Twitter space in utter shock. A young one, just 29 years old, gone, in a single moment. It was and is still heartbreaking for me and those who cared. It reminded me quickly of my father's death at the start of January 2022. Someone who had been with his family to celebrate the festive season, someone with a clean bill of health, had a stroke and died. That was the end.

Then you ask yourself what your purpose in life is—the answer is simply to live. Live with a purpose, live with intention, live with love and compassion, and live every moment.

Live with a purpose: As much as we are upset that Rico Swavey died such an early death, he lived with a purpose. His passion was to sing and from what we observed and what his friends and family said, he lived his complete truth. There are many people out there that have forgotten what it is like to actually live because they simply exist. They exist for their work and family but not themselves. I can 100% relate to this because at some point I fell into a routine of simply existing, moving around like a robot controlled by the work to-do list. At every point in the year, we feel this burnout that makes us live mechanically but, we owe it to ourselves to snap out of it, rediscover and pursue our true purpose.

Live with Intention: You have defined your purpose or at least you’ve searched yourself and have now figured out what your purpose is, it is now time to do everything with intention. Being intentional means committing yourself to a course of action that would help you approach your purpose/passion. If your purpose is to become a world-famous writer like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie then set out a plan, start by practising writing, join the writers' community or take a course on writing. Commit to following through with these steps and you are well on your way to stardom.

“All great acts are ruled by intention. What you mean is what you get.”
― Brenna Yovanoff, The Replacement

Live with Love and Have Compassion: Figure out why you find it difficult to live, why can’t you breathe easy? Attack that pain point, you see, if you can’t find yourself to love then you can’t love or have compassion for anybody else. So the goal is to seek yourself first, fall in love with who you are and who you want to be, take a look at your flaws and work on them and once you are healed it would be easy to live, love and be compassionate about others.

Live Every Moment: Life is truly worth living and though the road is rough it is all a part of the process. Everyone [Yes I mean everyone] has downtime but remember to be present.

Be present in all things and thankful for all things. ― Maya Angelou

There’s a tear in your life that would overcome you if you don’t stitch it in time. Find that tear, it could be work, money, an unhappy home, your environment, or whatever the case is, you must find it because your life depends on fixing that problem.

And remember, you must not resign yourself to simply existing, the only course of action you have for being alive is to LIVE.
