A Summer in Salzburg
Salzburg — a beautiful city with
beautiful landscapes. On our
recent visit to Austria we
embraced all this wonderful
little hub had to offer for tourists.
The quaint streets lined with
shops, all with their own iron
sign. Even McDonalds looked
classy! Right in the centre, a
cathedral. Fountains and
monuments round every corner.
A towering fortress atop a sheer
cliff face, a mountain trail
slowly climbing upwards. The
convent from ‘The Sound Of
Music’, with the most incredible
prayer going on inside the
old, stone structure. The streets
and many squares abundant with
street performers, from
contemporary buskers to traditional
artists. All of this on the edge of a
natural river, which holds a weekly
market.
It’s a small place, but would still
be worth paying a visit to, especially
during a roadtrip across Europe
where you won’t be staying for long.
The highlight? The nearby
mountain range. The Untersberg.
Riding up the cable car, the views
are incredible, slowly watching
lush plains and pretty chalets
turning into tiny specks of colour.
At the top, an even better view —
fields and mountains as far as the
eye can see. You literally feel like
you’re on top of the world,
without the effort of training for
a proper climb up a high peak.
I went up Mount Teide in
Tenerife several years back, and
there I was right in the clouds.
But there is something different
about a grassy mountain range,
where, after the initial climb,
you can just sit and chill out for
hours, feeling completely serene.
It’s so real and so inspiring, the
kind of place you can just become
lost in your thoughts. The whole
experience was tiring for a while, but
even before we reached somewhere
to lounge out and picnic, the
inspiration was flowing. The birds
flying overhead, the little crevices,
the vibrant plant-life. A perfect little
slice of the natural world.
