A first-person fight to the death takes place in the depths of a horrifying space station. System Shock is a first-person action adventure with immersive additions of a sim-based game, cyberpunk, and horror. Its original game was released in 1994 and developed by Looking Glass Studios, serving as a classic first-person action and horror game.

In 2023, System Shock returned with a shocking remake that stood true to its original with new visuals, sounds, and controls. There’s a lot to discover about this scary space adventure.

The Nightmare on System Shock

The remake of System Shock, developed by Nightdive Studios, takes the player to a space station, Citadel Station, where it serves as the main setting in the game. Citadel Station becomes a nightmarish journey for survival as it is taken over by an evil rogue AI named SHODAN, turning all personnel on the space station into an army of cyborgs and mutants.

The player will have to survive the horrors of the station and defeat the AI that seeks to threaten humanity on Earth. Along the way, the player will collect various weapons, ordinances, and upgrades needed to combat the enemies in their path, and at times, travel into cyberspace using the space station’s terminals to lessen SHODAN’s control.

Cyberpunk and Survival Horror

Upon investing 10 hours into the game, some interesting observations were made. There’s a combination of elements mixed in to create, or in this case, remake a masterpiece including cyberpunk, horror, action, adventure, and puzzle-solving. It starts with traveling through a dystopian futuristic city in a cyberpunk universe on the way home, only to be taken away to a horror-filled space station.

The vibe captured during gameplay was experiencing the survival horror aspect, where you will experience jumpscares by an enemy out of nowhere and then have to fight for your life. Gathering resources such as health and ammunition, and saving them, are crucial for surviving enemy encounters. There are moments in the game when enemies are on the hunt and there is insufficient ammunition to fight them.

Puzzle-solving is also a great addition to this remake, blending in with the survival horror. However, there’s a twist to the puzzle-solving aspect that the game throws in, utilizing certain resources such as audio logs found in-game for references, and overall muscle memory. There is minimal to no hand-holding when it comes to solving puzzles.

A Shocking Success

I’ve never played the original System Shock before but when hearing about the remake, I had to buy and play it for myself. What Nightdive Studios did with the remake sparked a lot of positivity for the fans of System Shock as it lived up to what the original was like. For those who enjoy cyberpunk themes and survival horror, give this one a go as it is available on Steam.
