CHALLENGE YOURSELF

Ryan Rohmiller

I spent the other morning searching and reading blogs across the internet on youth and high school sports. I have read a lot of good writings in doing so and there seems to be a common theme amongst them all. From parents, to coaches, to success, there seems to be a lot of wondering minds and unanswered questions. Frankly, I think it’s just a lot of overthinking. We are quick to blame our lack success on outside circumstances (coaches, parents, and other players) and we are always last to look at ourselves, if at all. Don’t get me wrong, I understand everything cannot be in our control, but we cannot have that mindset, it’s negative. A positive mindset is what we are after. Sports can teach us a lot about life if we allow them to. By looking as every circumstance from a positive outlook, we are able to keep all doors of opportunity open. If you have parents being loud and obnoxious, use it as a time to teach and influence them that their actions are doing more damage than development. If you have a coach that is not playing you than use it as an opportunity to challenge yourself. Pull your coach to the side and talk with him or her. Find out what it is that is preventing you from playing and then go work on it, it’s pretty simple, you just have to put in the time to want to get better. And, don’t try and keep up with your teammates. We all develop at different speeds so please do not compare yourself. Rather, use your teammates as a challenge to get better. Understand that there is something to be learned from everyone on your team. If you can learn one thing from every teammate, I guarantee you will have a better understanding of what it takes to be a talented athlete. Challenge yourself.

Thanks for reading. It would mean a lot if you could share this blog with 1 other person. I’d love for everyone to read this!
