I refrain from psychoanalyzing celebrities. I find that they have enough to deal with, and I don’t find meaning in adding to their misery by hypothetically diagnosing them. However, I have no problem attempting to unveil the psychoanalytical themes in their art.

“I love it” by Kanye West feat Lil’Pump, and Adele Givens was strategically debuted at a the PornHub awards. I saw an influx of comments that Kanye West’s fetishes are exemplified in the video, and they might have been. The fetish would be men who enjoy dating women who are sexually adventurous (liberal term)/ promiscuous (conservative term). I’ve found that in the Black Community this is a taboo and a fetish that is only found in the Caucasian Community. However, in my private practice, I can attest that this “fetish” exists in high rates amongst all races. So, let’s review some lyrics from “I love it” and try to understand the psychology behind it shall we?

“You’re such a fuckin’ hoe; I love it.”

This is straightforward and sets the precedent for the fetish we wish to explore.

“I like hearin’ stories, I like that ho shit”
“I wanna hear more shit, I like the ho shit”

Well, this is where it gets good. Now, why would a Black Man enjoy hearing sex stories of the woman he is dating? Here are some plausible reasons:

1. Generational Trauma. Black women have been seen and used as sex objects in this country (America) since slavery. Often when people are victims of trauma; their mind attempts to sexualize the trauma to ease the pain of the memories and instead turn that into pleasurable ones. Therefore, Black Men being powerless to the sexual victimization of black women, have taken this and turned the act into one of sexual desire.

2. Misogyny. In the Black Community, especially rap culture that has been interlinked with rape culture can also provide some reasoning to the fetish. Some Black Men do enjoy the devaluing of women; it gives them a sense of power and some ability to control something in their environment.

3. Toxic Masculinity. Do you watch porn? Are you watching men have sex with women that you desire? Well, then it wouldn’t be farfetched that these fantasies would leak over into your intimate life. Those men who still have some primitive characteristics also enjoy the conquest of being the supreme man in his woman’s life. He enjoys hearing the sex stories of his partner to invoke his feelings of jealousy, dominance, competition, and conquest. This could also fuel a narcissist Black Man. By hearing these stories, it boosts his ego by confirming that he is the best man his woman has ever been with.

Does this mean that this fetish is bad? That’s up to you. In therapy, all diagnosis stems from when a phobia, fetish, or symptoms have caused distress and disrupted the life of a person. If you find your fetish to be unproblematic and your adult consenting sexual partner is onboard with your fetish, then enjoy!
