Just when you thought he couldn’t go lower than branding mental health sufferers as fakes, Spiked magazine editor Brendan O’Neill has turned his sharp tongue on Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg. “This young woman sounds increasingly like a millenarian weirdo,” says O’Neill, likening the climate change activist to a cult leader with “monotone voice” and “the look of apocalyptic dread in her eyes”.

I’d like to think he writes this stuff to play devil’s advocate but in singling out the shy but determined teenager who has inspired school children around the world, I wonder if her climate change concerns have touched a nerve.

Environmental and political journalist George Monbiot highlights the potential reason for O’Neill’s insults, posting on Twitter. Monbiot has written before about the far right agenda pushed in the UK by the Koch brothers who fund Spiked magazine. The two American brothers, co-owners of Koch Industries, have financial interests in the oil, chemicals, timber and cattle ranching industries, reports Monbiot.

O’Neill sounds like the Koch brothers’ mouthpiece when he accuses the green movement…
