To Lonely Mums Today — You’re Not Alone

Today is Mother’s Day in the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey, and Guernsey. On this special we show appreciation for our mums and give words of thanks we always mean to say, but which get lost in the daily bustle.

It’s a day to celebrate all the wonderful women who love their children in the best way they can. But what if you’re a mum yourself and you’re alone today?

This week, I’ve seen reminders to “Show your mum just how much she means to you this Mother’s Day.” I’ve seen bouquets bursting with beauty and chocolates adorned with ribbon to be given with hugs.

No doubt I’ll see Facebook posts with mums, daughters and sons beaming happiness, and I’ll feel a twinge of jealousy and a surge of loneliness.

I’m home alone, you see. My husband works on the other side of the world, my daughter is studying birds in the desert, and my son lives a few hours away. I miss them and wonder when we can be together again.

If you’re alone too, don’t despair. We may not be able to see those we love today, maybe not ever. But we can choose how we spend the day — in sadness, or in celebration of motherhood.

We can sink as loneliness overwhelms us, or we can dry our tears. We can find photographs, drawings and cards kept over the years and fill our day with joyful memories of the love we’ve given and received.

There’s no point in looking at what others have, not today, or any day. There’s nothing to be gained from comparing, only more of ourselves to lose.

My message to all the lonely mums who may feel more alone today — we’re not alone. We may not have flowers or chocolates or hugs, but we have memories and love for the family we helped create. What greater gift is there?
