Think about yourself when you wake up from a good restful sleep. You know the kind of sleep where you hardly know that the day has passed. Imagine that refreshed feeling as the energy surges through your body. Now multiply that by hundreds and hundreds of nights in a row and you start to get an idea about how important sleep is. On the other hand imagine a fitful night of tossing and turning, being frustrated, feeling like you got no sleep at all and waking up bleary eyed. Again, multiply that by hundreds and hundreds of nights in a row. That’s the life of a chronic insomniac and it can lead to a miserable life and even an early death.

The thing about it is, the majority of US adults suffer from at least one sleep problem. In fact The National Sleep Foundation found that a whopping 75% of adults had at least one sleep problem. They further found that 54% of adults suffered from at least one symptom of insomnia! A full and to 15% of US adults suffer from chronic insomnia problems. $2 billion is spent annually in the US just can’t sleep medication.

The 2 billion is a small number compared to the $100 billion that is the estimate of how much sleep disorders cost the US annually in loss of productivity, medical, and property damage. Chronic loss of sleep has been shown to be directly related to serious chronic diseases like obesity, heart disease, and even cancer. Short term loss of sleep has been shown to be directly related to short term health problems like headaches and stomach issues.

Sleep issues are serious because when suffering from them, especially chronically, one’s life is effected almost completely. In other words, everything you do through out the day is impacted by the amount of rest that you habitually get. Mood, focus, and overall well-being are all directly related to sleep or lack there of. This all is compounded by the fact that very few people suffering from sleep disorders get any sort of treatments or help. It is estimated that only 3% of US citizens receive any type of professional help for sleep disorders. It is one of the things that people seem to just suffer through.

I believe the rising numbers of Americans having sleep problems is directly related to two main factors.

The first is a population that is almost universally deficient in magnesium. Two of the best natural sources of magnesium are dark green leafy vegetables and bone marrow. I don’t believe that much of these items are consumed in our present day lives and it has led to low magnesium levels. Also, current data suggest that the majority of magnesium supplements taken in our country today do not increase overall magnesium levels. The reason why this is important in regard to sleep is that magnesium is a mineral which directly aids overall relaxation in the human body.

The second of the two main factors that I believe is responsible for the increasing numbers of US citizens with sleep issues is the hormone melatonin. Our body has a neat little thing it does as the day’s light begins to fade. In response to the evening light our brain tells our pituitary gland to produce and secrete the hormone melatonin. This hormone in turn allows us to relax and drift into a deep sleep. There is a big interruption in this process in our current culture today. When one is in the home or building with lights on, when one stares at the TV or computer, the production and sick creation of melatonin is stopped or lowered.

It seems clear to me that many US adults are having sleep issues because of magnesium deficiency and an interruption and melatonin. If you have read this entire article please help get the word out to your friends and loved ones about how they can protect themselves from a growing and crucially important pattern in our society today.
