The Evolution of the Headband (Katie Weigle)

The headband has been around forever. We’ve come a very long way.

The Evolution of the Headband

Over the course of many generations, women have tried to figure out what will best hold hair out of the way. Whether for an individual workout or game time, it was the headband that did the trick. So let’s consider how far we’ve come.

The plastic headband complete with TEETH.

Why, oh why did we think this was smart? Does anyone else still have scars in her scalp because she dug that headband in so tight to keep her hair back?

Stay right there, bangs, and don’t you move an inch!
Plastic Headband with Teeth

After barely an hour into the headbanded day, the headache would take over and all bets of concentration were off. The only solution? Removing the headband! But wait! Consider the residual effects. Hair had been plastered into place and would not survive the day without the headband.

This results in forcing the issue of pressing forth through the day in hopes of the plastic teeth not causing future brain damage. Teeth. Teeth are made for chewing, biting, even holding a bobby pin open (not recommended by any dentist on the face of the planet, but every woman does it), but for digging into your scalp? No thanks.

The classic (and coordinated) sweatband.

Hello, Jane Fonda, aerobics and Jazzercize. In fact we matched our headbands with our wristbands because, well of course, fashion first!

If we were really good, our headband would match our scrunchie that matched our leg warmers that coordinated perfectly with our outfit. Classy. But, oh my goodness, the heat! Yes, we trapped that heat ON to our head (and apparently feared cold legs too for that matter).

Because, of course, while working out, that is certainly what makes the most sense. Trap the heat IN! (Please note the sarcasm dripping from that statement.)

Desperation sets in: We turn to pre-wrap.

Sure enough, no doubt on a long road trip to a college game, a young athlete digs through the trainer’s kit in hopes of finding something to hold her bangs back (as her sweatband was accidentally left behind….*gasp*!).

She comes upon pre-wrap. It stretches, it ties, it sticks just enough. It’s perfect! So perfect, in fact, that it gets passed around the bus and the pre-wrap headband is launched. In fact, it launches companies to put designs on pre-wrap.

Trainers are running out of pre-wrap. Who budgets extra money for pre-wrap in fear of running out?

We put our brains to use: The sticky strip is born.

Surely pre-wrap cannot be the final answer on headbands, can it? So we take cloth, sew it in a circular pattern and add a little sticky strip to the inside and hope for the best. And for a while, it works…

Until we sweat too much and the headband fell in our face, or we stretched out the fabric from too much use. Or it got dirty and grimy. Or we realized that we were overheating when we wore it because, again, it trapped the heat onto our head.

Something’s GOT to give! (Something other than the elastic!)

Enter: The TreadBand. Where tire technology meets the headband.

The clouds part. The angels sing. Consider what we demand of the tires on our cars. Dry roads, rain-soaked, ice covered, snow packed, or off road terrain.

We ask a lot of our tires. And they perform every time…when we equip them correctly. Tread on tires is designed to keep our cars from slipping and hydroplaning. It is designed to grab the road and hold it. With that same mentality, TreadBands have been designed to stay put, hold strong and push moisture away. When you put a TreadBand on for the first time, your plastic-tooth-scarred scalp will celebrate.

“We have made it! We have found the solution!”

From the comfort of the soft ring-spun poly/spandex fabric to the small strip of stretchable tread on the inside, you will suddenly find exactly what you have needed to comfortably hold your hair back in this breathable fabric that will stay just where you put it.

Whether your workout includes running, cycling, cross training, or you are looking for the perfect tie back for your field hockey, basketball, soccer or lacrosse game, the TreadBand is equipped to perform and equipped to last.
