You guessed it, the night before Jesus turned 2,015 years old. Happy belated!
Also, the day that mankind received arguably the greatest Christmas present ever. That was the day that the most brilliant catalogue of musical achievement was released on streaming services worldwide…For free! Twitter was abuzz, Facebook was brimming with statuses plagiarizing Paul McCartney, and your Instagram feed had at least two black and white pictures of John Lennon posing in his sleeveless white shirt that read “New York City” and an introspective caption, something like “imagine.”. Ah, the hipster, counter-culture Beatles fans. The Beatles, 51 years after blowing the minds of millions on The Ed Sullivan Show, again dominated the pop culture conversation.
The other day, a friend of mine — also a huge Beatles fan — emailed me a link to a post on Dueling Data. How unique are we? Enjoying The Beatles is basically the same as saying you like happiness & ice cream & the opening scene of Superbad. Anyway, the post was an incredible infographic, the work of a data mad scientist splicing and dicing information in ways that would make a calculator burst into flames. Some of the ridiculousness produced by the Fab Four Liverpudlians:
- 18 (EIGHTEEN!) albums released between 1964 and 1970…that’s an average of three a year. Dudes knew how to write a song.
- 21 US Number 1’s. The Rolling Stones, no slouches themselves, have 8. And they’ve been playing together since the Middle Ages. The Beatles released 21 in about 6 years.
- John Lennon and Paul McCartney only had one #1 song after 1967 (thanks a lot, Yoko). For your reference, The White Album, Yellow Submarine, and Abbey Road were all released after 1967.
We’d be doing you a disservice if we didn’t give you our take on the 10 Greatest Beatles Songs. Of course, there’s a card in our app with this contest, so make sure your voice is heard on there, too. This is really, really difficult & I’m sure you’ll disagree with us on some of these. The discussion on how we arrived on these ten was a long and winding road, if you will.
Sorry.
