Row Covers
This week in Garden class, I’ve been working on putting row covers over our garden beds. Row covers are tarps that are put over the garden beds to protect them. These row covers protect the garden beds from pests and frosts.
For example, let’s say Fred and Isabela planted Kohlrabi. Fred planted his kohlrabi perfectly and followed the steps correctly. Isabela followed the steps, but didn’t plant hers perfectly and she decided to put row covers over her Kohlrabi. Over time, Fred’s Kohlrabi was repeatedly attacked by unwanted pests and frost, which eventually killed the Kohlrabi. He may ahve planted his Kohlrabi perfectly, but without the row covers to protect it (He did not want to use chemicals), most of the Kohlrabi wasn’t clean and didn’t survive. Meanwhile, Isabela’s Kohlrabi was doing great. Many pests tried to harm her Kohlrabi, but couldn’t get in and her Kohlrabi grew clean and was perfect.
Most gardeners use chemicals to keep their plants and herbs safe from pests, but most of the chemicals that they use have ingredients that are not good for the air or the environment. Here in my garden, we are going to continue to add row covers to our beds and I hope that this protects our plants and herbs from anything dangerous for them.
