A Political Divide

On the anonymous opinion app, Aop, the following question was answered by people across America: “How should Presidential elections be decided?”

  • Popular Vote
  • Electoral College

Between the two parties our data shows an incredible partisan divide.

  • Democrats overwhelmingly support a change to the system, preferring to pick the President through a popular vote at 90%.
  • 78% of Republicans favor keeping the current Electoral College system.
  • Independent voters slightly favor a popular vote system at 59%.

The older you are, the more likely you are to support an Electoral College system. Baby Boomers support the current system at 72%, while 47% of Generation X wants to keep the current system. Meanwhile, 62% of Millennials favor using the popular vote to decide future elections.

Hispanic and Black voters strongly support a popular vote system (82%,87%). Asians slightly support switching to a popular vote, while 57% of Whites favor the electoral college.
