The ideal number of children?
A clear leading vote for most Americans.

On the anonymous opinion app, Aop, the following question was answered by people across America: “In your opinion, what is the ideal number of child for a couple to have?” Here were the possible answers.

- Two
- Three
- Four or more
The results gave us a strong winner at 56%.

Men and women are almost in total agreement on the this question. More women voted for having three children as the ideal number, while men showed a slightly greater interest in having just one child. Interestingly, Men also slightly preferred having “Four or more” children compared to women at 9% vs. 8%.

All five regions of the United States agreed that two was the ideal number of children to have. The Northeast region led the way in thinking that “two” was the ideal number of children, with 67% voting that way.
What region supports having the most kids? The Pacific region, where 11% said they thought that “Four or more” was the ideal number. States like Washington and California lead the way for thinking a larger family is the ideal.

In a look at the different generations, we see an interesting trend. The younger the generation, the less likely they are to think a large family is the ideal. The Baby Boomer generation supports having three, four, or even more kids at a much higher rate than Gen X and Millennials.



People of Black, Asian, White and Hispanic ethnicity all agreed that two was the ideal number of children to have. Blacks supported having an only child at a higher rate than any other group at 14%, while Asians had the highest support for large families at 10%.

Does your political affiliation have anything to do with this question of children? Just a little. Republicans showed a greater interest in having three kids, while Independents had the strongest support for one-child families. Democrats had a strong leaning toward two child families.
