Your gun control argument is wrong.

I had this conversation with my students once, and now I’m going to have it with you. To start, let me say this: I absolutely don’t give a shit about guns or gun laws one way or the other. If you want a gun, go get yourself one and be happy. If you don’t, then don’t. I could honestly care less.
What I do care about is all the insane division that we are creating ourselves. No one is doing it for us, this is all us, and we can’t pass the blame. So let’s talk about a few things like real disgruntled adults should so that we can hopefully move on together.
First, they’re not talking your guns. I promise. If they wanted to, they would have done it when they had a seated democrat president, and a super-majority in both houses of congress. They could have passed anything they wanted. They didn’t do it then, because they aren’t going to. They aren’t going to do it now either, especially because they don’t have the votes for it anymore. For one, it’s political suicide, and that’s not a politicians strategy now is it? Second, they just can’t.
Let’s break down a little 10th grade government for you, okay. You have a right to bear arms. Really, you don’t, because that’s not at all what the second amendment is about, but we’ve made it about that today, and it’s sticking. Even If they tried, it wouldn’t pass muster in the supreme court, and the law would be gone in a heartbeat. Remember that lesson on checks and balances? That’s a real thing. Even if Obama would sign it into law, that law would never pass TWO houses of congress in the first place. Remember how a bill becomes a law? So stop pretending it can happen. It’s literally a conspiracy theory, and now you’re one of those guys.
Just stop.
Second, there’s absolutely zero concrete evidence that arming citizens makes this place safer. So don’t pretend like there is. It’s hyperbole. You are right that gun laws only effect legal gun owners, but we aren’t going to pass a ton of gun laws anyway, so that argument matter. Plus, you wouldn’t give them up anyway, you would just become the new illegal gun owner. Also, that Nazi takeover of Germany is a completely different situation, and we all know it, so don’t give me that bullshit comparison. If you really think that we’re in a similar situation, then you’re as crazy as I am. So just stop.
You gun control people, you also can’t compare England’s, France’s, or Australia’s disarmament to the US, because we’re a different country, with a different culture, and over 300 million guns already in circulation (and that’s just the legal guns). So it would be physically impossible, and completely improbable to think it’s even an option. At the time, they had a culture that wasn’t gun dependent, or even gun concerned. They didn’t arm themselves against the government when they took them away like we would. It wasn’t political suicide for parliament to make that call. So stop thinking you’re making a great argument. You’re not.
Just stop.
What is happening, is that we aren’t discussing real possibilities facing the US. We’re not discussing the real possibility that we might be entering a new ground war in the middle east—AGAIN! We’re not talking about the US bombing a civilian hospital, or questioning whether our excuses even make sense in the first place. We aren’t discussing legal confiscation of property by the police (look it up), or whether the sudden changes happening in the executive and legislative branches are related in any way. We aren’t discussing our policies of just throwing money at the symptoms instead of addressing the real causes in nearly every situation that our "leaders" are presented with. We’re spending so much time on fictional what-if scenarios, that we’re ignoring actual possibilities without even noticing (or even caring maybe?).
So both of you, just stop. You’re not helping anything. You aren’t championing any causes, because these are all false alarms. You’re not part of any solution. You’re a problem. Accept the truth, and move on so we can actually start working toward a real change, and an actual better future. Nothing will change, and no one is better off, and that’s just how it is.
If we’re going to talk politics, and decide we want to engage, let’s discuss real issues and actual possibilities. If we pumped this much time, money, and effort into real causes, this would be a different place. So go shoot your guns. Or don’t. I really don’t care. But stop acting like any of this shit matters.
Just stop.
