The Best Bets for Exotic Wagering at Del Mar

The 78th summer meeting at Del Mar has started, and the famous seaside oval has produced a stunning upset on opening weekend. Arrogate, the world’s best and №1 ranked racehorse was beaten as a 1–20 favorite on opening weekend July 22nd in the San Diego Handicap. As race fans tried to recover their losses in the final race on Saturday and then Sunday for more wagering action, they no doubt had a big score in mind as they tried to make a recovery shot at the wagering window.

In what will now rank as the biggest upset in the history of a track that opened 80 summers ago, bettors may think twice before laying too much money on a huge favorite like Arrogate.

The horse racing landscape is now over-run with Pick Threes, Pick Fours, Pick Fives, Super High Fives, the Pick Six with huge jackpots and numerous other exotic wagers including Quinnellas, Exactas, Trifectas and Superfectas.

In this day and age of exotic wagering at Del Mar — and every track around the country — one thin dime can make all the difference. Every race provides the chance to play a 10-cent Superfecta, where the bettor tries to pick the first four horses finishing in the correct order.

The great thing about playing the exotics is it gives the little guy a chance to win big. That’s difficult to do with small bets when you play the Win-Place-Show betting.

Exacta bets are probably your best bets for simplicity. Pick the 1st and 2nd place finisher in exact order. You can make a $1 wager, box two horses for $2 or even add multiple horses in a box or key a few horses to win with other horses and some long shots to finish 1st or second.

Trifecta bets can be placed for as little as 50 cents, and these too are more playable and produce even bigger payoffs. Like an exacta, you must pick the 1st and 2nd place horse, but also the 3rd place finisher in the exact order of finish. The more horses you add in your combinations, box or keys, the greater the cost. But the longer the odds of a horse that comes in 1st, 2nd or 3rd, the higher the payoff. Further reading on how to bet trifectas.

While Superfectas are not played as often as an exacta or a trifecta, they are still considered some of the best bets since you can place a superfecta bet for as little as 10 cents and get an even bigger payoff. You must pick the order of finish correctly for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finisher. The more horses in your combinations, the greater the cost, but with 10 cent superfectas available for wagering, the superfecta has become a popular wager and best bet for many more race fans.

The races want it, so where you can bet something you can afford and still find a pot of gold in the end.

If you’re lucky enough to beat the ponies and want to take a stab to add more to your stash, then try the superfecta with multiple combinations for the 10 cent minimum, and you may have a fun and potential big payoff for less than a $20 investment. Not a bad best bet when visiting the track or wagering to win at Del Mar — Cool as Ever.
