1. Do your research on the company.

One thing that always differentiates candidates to me is when they have done their due diligence researching the company, its culture, and the position available. An applicant who has taken additional time to read the company’s website, career pages, and published content demonstrates their genuine interest in the company and speaks to the kind of worker he or she is. When candidates mention things like “I noticed you have a great company culture and volunteer with The Special Olympics,” I know they have done their research.

Finding the right company is like dating, it’s a two-way street so don’t take the easy way out and stop at the job description. Give it your all and make sure it’s a place you see yourself staying awhile. You’ll save both yourself and the recruiter some valuable time.

2. Tell your journey through your cover letter.

A cover letter is your first chance to tell your story in your own words and to catch the reviewer’s eye. Although many applications don’t require one, cover letters are the opportunity to showcase your skills and personality in a way bulleted points on a resume cannot. Get creative and paint a picture of what you bring to the table, how you will stand out and why you are the right person for the role. You can tell the reader a lot more there than you may be able to on your one page resume.

3. Make sure the core values of the Company align with your personal values.

We all have core beliefs that help guide our daily behaviors and dictate the way we live our lives. Companies have core values to align employees towards “true north” and make sure it stays on the right course. When an individual’s values align with their employer’s definition of core values, it becomes a seamless partnership. At UE.co, one of our core values is Continuous Improvement which resonates with me on a personal level. I truly believe in lifelong learning in all aspects of life, personally and professionally, which is why having programs like uLeader are so meaningful.

4. Match the relevant job skills to your experience.

Help the recruiter understand why you’re a good fit for the role by drawing clear parallels between your experience and the sought-after job requirements. Read the job description carefully and tailor your achievements to the bulleted role requirements. Show how you’ve been successful in the past by giving examples of how you’ve accomplished the skills and experience the position requires.

5. Make sure to follow up with a thank you!

Reaching out to the recruiter and team members you met goes a long way! It expresses your continued dedication and shows you possess follow-through. No one has ever received a thank you email or handwritten note and deducted interview points. Be sure to follow through within a reasonable amount of time.
