In honor of National Foster Care Month, Jason Kulpa interviewed Phyllis D., a foster parent that has partnered with Kulpa to launch a corporate giving scholarship, “The Jason and Phyllis Scholarship”, to foster families in their communities. The scholarship awards a foster family funds for education supplies, new clothing, family trips, etc.

Jason: “Why did you choose to become a foster parent?”

Phyllis: “Over twenty years ago, my husband and I decided to take foster care classes to become foster parents for our niece. Originally, we told ourselves that we would foster her and no one else; then we first-hand experienced the joy that comes with providing a safe home, resources, and even a little stability to children who are lacking. Since becoming foster parents for our niece, we have fostered over 50 children.”

Jason: “What are the biggest challenges foster families must overcome?”

Phyllis: “We almost never know the exact length of time a child will be with us; this is hard for both the children and myself due to the uncertainty. Foster parents also focus heavily on safety; many times the children come from an unstable home environment, and we want them to feel secure and safe in our home. The biggest challenge, however, is that many children come to the families with almost nothing of their own, meaning it’s up to the foster family to provide essentials like clothes, hygiene items, toys, etc.”

Jason: “What are foster children’s biggest needs/How can businesses provide for families like yours?”

Phyllis: “The biggest physical needs of the children are education supplies, clothes, and even special gifts like Christmas and birthday gifts. To help provide for the children’s developmental needs, companies can sponsor events like field trips, or even providing tutors for extra help in school. Any size gift goes a long way for both the foster parents and the children!”

Jason: “What is your favorite part of being a foster parent?”

Phyllis: “Wow. There are just so many. I would have to say knowing that I have helped children and the relationships that I formed with the children, many of them still call me mom even after they have moved on. These relationships with my foster sons and daughters are something I cherish and bring me so much joy.”
