Statement from Government and Community of Pitcairn Island on the Marine Protected Area

The people of Pitcairn warmly welcome the designation of the Pitcairn Islands Marine Protected Area. It is the culmination of a shared journey over five years. The close collaboration between Pitcairn, the UK Government, Non-Governmental Organisations and academic researchers has been a demonstration of true partnership.

For Pitcairners, the MPA represents the recognition of this jewel which is the waters around our islands: waters which are home to the wreck of the HMS Bounty and to 1,249 identified marine species — including at least two found nowhere else on Earth — and one of the world’s only two remaining raised coral atolls: a ring shaped coral reef as well as 40–mile reef: the world’s deepest and most well-developed known coral reef.

The MPA will also help us to protect and nurture the fish species which are vital to our way of life for present and future generations.

The Pitcairn community is proud to be entrusted with the stewardship of this unique marine ecosystem and to be part of global efforts to safeguard marine environments.
