What Size Should My Image Be?

Welcome to our updated social media image guide. Let us assist you in making sure your images appropriately appear on their respective social media platform by providing the specific dimensions for each leading social network from Facebook and Twitter, to Instagram, Pinterest and Snapchat.

FACEBOOK. With 1.79 billion monthly active users, Facebook is the largest social network in the entire world.

Profile Photo: 180 x 180 pixels (Displays 160 x 160 on desktop computers, 140 x 140 on mobile devices.)

Cover Photo: 820 x 312 pixels (Photos can be larger, but will be cropped to fit. Photo displays as 640 x 360 on mobile devices)

Shared Image: 1200 x 630 pixels (The photo will appear in the newsfeed at a maximum of 470 pixels wide and on a Facebook Page at a maximum of 504 pixels wide)

Shared Link: 1200 x 627 pixels

Shared links should include a rectangular image with text underneath. The rectangular photo minimum size is 470 x 246 pixels within the feed and a minimum of 484 x 252 pixels on the page.

Event Image Cover Photo: 1920 x 1080 pixels (Facebook Events help with your promotion. It’s like an ‘evite’ for Facebook.

TWITTER. With 317 million monthly active users, Twitter is a social network where users stay up to date on news, events, and the platform in which The University of New Hampshire is most often mentioned.

Profile Photo: 400 x 400 pixels (Displays as 200 x 200)

The Twitter profile photo is the image that represents your name across the social network. Don’t be an egg!

Header Photo: 1500 x 500 pixels

The header photo appears at the top of each Twitter homepage. Be creative, as you have a large space to share something that represents your college, department, or organization.

In-Stream Photo: 506 x 253 pixels (May include up to 4 photos per tweet)

Twitter allows users to attach photo(s) to tweets and since last autumn, they do not count against your 140-character limit.

INSTAGRAM. With over 650 million monthly active users, Instagram is the most popular photo-sharing social network. At UNH, we post at least once per day, but most often twice, especially if we’re covering an event.

Profile Photo: 110 x 110 pixels

Photo Thumbnails: 161 x 161

When visitors see your Instagram page, they’ll see up to nine of your images in rows of thumbnails, which expand when clicked on.

Photo Size:

Square Image: 1080 x 1080 pixels

Vertical Image: 1080 x 1350 pixels

Horizontal Image: 1080 x 566 pixels

Even though the images should added at 1080 x 1080 pixels, Instagram scales down the photos to 612 x 612 pixels.

Instastories: 720 x 1280 pixels and saved as a jpg or png no larger than 100kb.

Not familiar? Instagram’s Snapchat-like feature is called Instastory and it lets users create photo sequences, or videos, that expire after 24 hours.

PINTEREST. Pinterest helps drive referral traffic to your site through engaging images.

Profile Photo: 165 x 165 pixels on your home page, but appears 32 x 32 everywhere else on Pinterest.

Pin Sizes:

Main page: 236 pixels wide

On board: 236 pixels wide

Expanded: Minimum width of 600 pixels wide

There is only a limit on the width of images in Pinterest. The length of an image has no set size, hence all the varied-size infographics that appear throughout Pinterest.

SNAPCHAT. Are you interested in making a Community or On-Demand Geofilter? Create your own, or use Snap Inc.’s online geofilter creation tool.

Snap Size: 1080 x 1920 pixels with a 149 pixel buffer at the top and bottom of the geofilter. The file must be a web-optimized transparent PNG file and under 300 KB. Remember, Community geofilters do not allow trademarks or websites.
