“I just love teaching”
South Sudanese Refugee teacher in Elmeriam Locality, West Kordofan State

Marco is a 28-years-old South Sudanese teacher who had to leave his home and move to Elmeriam, West Kordofan. This was because of conflict and fights in his home town which destructed many schools in the area and forced many families to flee. As Marco settled in Elmeriam, he was feeling anxious about losing his job and worried about his students who lost their schools and are now deprived of access to education.
Earlier this year, Marco was moving around the village scoping for schools and noticed that new schools are under construction. After inquiring, he found out that Global Aid Hand (GAH) a local NGO, with support from UNICEF are building new schools to provide access to education for children, from amongst South Sudanese Refugees and host communities within the locality. Marco went to the nearest GAH office and talked to the education supervisor to express his interest in becoming part of the effort to get children back to school. GAH welcomed Marco and briefed him on project goals, activities and invited him to attend the Life Skills training workshop. Marco showed great enthusiasm and was happy that he was able to meet with other teachers at the training, some of whom were also from South Sudan.
Marco is thrilled as he once again discovers a purpose to life and some of his former students can get back to school.
Thanks to the support of European Union and partners such as Global Aid Hand, UNICEF is able to provide much needed learning opportunities to South Sudanese Refugees and host communities in affected states across Sudan.
Over 20,000 South Sudanese Refugees have this year been supported with access to education through UNICEF and its partners.
