UWD Mourns the Tragic Deaths and Injuries of Migrants in San Antonio

Austin, TX — Early yesterday morning, news broke in San Antonio of eight migrants found dead and more injured while stuck in a tractor-trailer.
Julieta Garibay, Campaigns Director and Co-Founder at United We Dream, said:
“As immigrants, we know that our community risks their lives to come to this country seeking a better life. It is heartbreaking to see people make the difficult decision to migrate only to have their journey end in tragedy. United We Dream sends our prayers and love to the survivors and the families and friends of those who have died.
“Lt. Governor Dan Patrick’s cynical ploy to win support for the controversial SB 4 with this tragedy is shameful and dishonest. The truth is that his racist law would force more people into the underground economy, put more people at risk and make every person of color in Texas a target.
“As we mourn the loss of life in San Antonio, we call upon elected officials and people of conscience to remain steadfast in their opposition to SB 4. Today we renew our commitment to doing everything we can to ensure that all people are treated with the dignity and love they deserve both as they migrate and throughout their lives in the U.S.”
