USASBE Board Member Spotlight: Meet Josh Bendickson, Director at Large (2019–2021)
Meet Josh Bendickson, Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at University of Louisiana Lafayette and one of USASBE’s four Directors at Large. The USASBE Medium Team recently sat down with Josh to learn more about him and what he’s hoping to accomplish on behalf of the membership in 2020. Here’s what he had to say.
Question: Please tell us a bit about you, your journey into academia, and why you chose to focus on entrepreneurship, and specifically, entrepreneurship education.
Coaching tennis was my first opportunity to teach. I did so during college and while teaching public school economics and civics. Then after finishing a MBA and working in business development I rejoined education, teaching at a community college while applying to PhD programs. There I realized I loved hearing about and helping students with business ideas.
Question: Building on that, a strategic focus for USASBE is to continually find new ways to create member value. What will you be working on in this regard during your term?
I will primarily be focusing on two efforts as a DAL. First, I’ll be leading USASBE’s Medium site working to help better tell the story of USASBE and its membership. Second, I was selected to serve as the DAL representative to the USASBE Executive Committee helping to ensure the voice of the membership is represented as key strategic decisions are made for the organization.
Question: You’re an LSU grad, who used to live in New Orleans, and now lives not too far from there. Given the USASBE 2020 Conference will be held in ‘The Big Easy’ what advice do you have for the USASBE Nation as we begin to plan for New Orleans?
Louisiana is one of the best kept startup secrets out there. Baton Rouge has a strong ecosystem and some great entrepreneurial support organizations. Lafayette is continually ranked as one of the best places to live in the U.S. and is quickly developing into a great startup hub for the southeast. New Orleans has long been a great place for arts entrepreneurship, but has also emerged as a strong hub for technology as well as a place that embraces entreprenuership education at all levels. Overall, attendees of USASBE 2020 is will certainly see, feel, and tastes the entrepreneurial spirit of Louisiana.
Question: If you could offer one piece of advice to someone attending a USASBE conference for the first time what would it be?
Attend the new member reception; it is a great opportunity to meet people early on in the conference.
Question: We love ending these with a personal tidbit. Can you share a fun fact about yourself? Something that makes you unique or something that would surprise those who don’t know you well?
