Bengal Tiger Cub Rescued from Smuggler

Customs and Border Protection officers rescued a Bengal tiger cub Wednesday morning at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. The cub was being smuggled by an 18-year-old man and 21 year-old man in a 2017 Chevy Camaro.

According to CBP, the men were arrested and agents of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service took custody of the tiger cub and are working with the San Diego Zoo to ensure its safety and well-being.
“CBP officers are often faced with unusual situations. The CBP officers at the Otay Mesa port of entry met the challenge head on and assisted in preserving the life of this endangered species.”-Pete Flores, director of field operations for CBP in San Diego.
An important reminder that even though tiger cubs may be cute, Bengal tigers are endangered and international trade in species listed by CITES is ILLEGAL unless authorized by permit.
