What is the difference between Ulord and IPFS? Many people ask me this question. I will use the form of Q&A to explain the difference between Ulord and IPFS.

What is IPFS?

IPFS is a new generation of decentralized distributed storage network called the interplanetary file system. IPFS has caught so much attention because it is different from the traditional HTTP protocol and other centralized storage methods. IPFS realizes real distributed storage, which will become the data storage foundation of all blockchain projects in the future and support the development of the whole blockchain industry. Therefore, the development of IPFS protocol is very worthy of expectation, and may gradually become the mainstream data storage method in the future to build a faster, safer and freer new Internet era.

IPFS, like all blockchain technologies, is based on P2P and forms a peer-to-peer transmission network. People can more easily connect together to form a global network. There is no central node in this network, and the resources you need may be in your neighbors or on the other side of the globe. The resources stored in IPFS may be scattered around the world, or be concentrated depending on the popularity of the resources. The hot resources will be easier to obtain and faster to access.

What is Ulord?

Ulord is a P2P value transfer public blockchain. Through building its blockchain underlying architecture and digital resource distribution protocols, it enables third-party developers to explore their own applications over open-source agreements to form a complete ecology of blockchain technology and applications. Based on various rules and protocols created by Ulord, it loads various types of digital resource application scenarios including text, pictures, music, video and software, providing a direct docking platform for information creators and consumers.

What are the similarities and differences between Ulord and IPFS?

Ulord is a value propagation network based on blockchain technology, a digital content distribution public blockchain. While IPFS implements a decentralized distributed storage network. The two concepts are quite different, but there is still some correlation between them.

Blockchain industry has crossed the stage of the pure value exchange of digital currencies, including through smart contracts. The next technical wave must be content-related and serve the real economy. But contents cannot be stored in the copied ledger and it must be solved with innovative technology. The purpose of IPFS is to establish a universal and efficient decentralized storage system. Ulord aims to establish a set of value logic based on decentralized storage solutions, and a platform for content distribution applications to realize the content value delivery ecosystem.

From this perspective, both face a pain point in the current blockchain development — content storage and distribution. Both have to face the challenge of decentralized storage systems, namely how to build reliable storage mechanism in an untrusted network. If the blockchain world was a computer, IPFS would add storage systems (hard disks) to this computer, and Ulord would build an operating system with storage management. Before the launch of Ulord platform, content-related DAPP was developed based on Ethereum or EOS public chain + IPFS + sidechain technology. Now, with Ulord providing complete support, the development of related DAPP by using Ulord’s API/SDK will become much simpler.

From a technical perspective, both are closely connected. Ulord team adheres to the spirit of “openness and studiousness”, and draws on the ideas and implementation of IPFS in the construction of its storage system UDFS. Meanwhile, there are innovations in some technical difficulties, such as the introduction of master node and voting mechanism to deal with fraud and supervision. Ulord team also follows the progress of IPFS, and new research results will be feedback to IPFS team.
