The World Needs A New Universal Standard (2)

A universal standard UIUX design for financial, transportation and oil & gas institutions.

If we pay attention to the UIUX design in ATM machines around the world we will notice they are all pretty much the same thing.

Also the UIUX design in metro ticket vending machines around the world is also pretty much the same.

And if we compare the UIUX design in ATMs and the UIUX design in metro ticket machines we will also notice that they are pretty much the same thing, as if the same person or team made them all.

This is because this UIUX design is the current universal standard adopted by these industries. Not sure if they did it on purpose but a standardized UIUX design across industries provides consumers a consistent experience. With all self-service machines having a similar user journey consumers would have a familiar experience across industries which means less mental stress for them.

But what about gas pumps, why didn’t gas pumps also adopted this design? This UIUX design concept is not a good fit for gas pumps. It is not better then the current mechanical experience at the gas pumps, this is one of the reasons gas pumps don’t have it.

ATM machines, Metro ticket machines and Gas pumps are universal machines used by hundreds of millions of us on a daily basis. We could call these machines The Three Sisters.

The Three Sisters are the most popular self-service machines around the world, they have been serving us most of our financial, transportation, and energy needs for the past 20+ years.

The old standard

The problem with the current universal standard is that it is a multi-facet design that requires customers to progress through multiple screens to get what they need. Everyone dislikes this user experience.

Also Gas pumps, one the Three Sisters, does not benefits from this standard. Therefore providing a multi-industry consistent user experience to consumers is not possible with the current universal standard.

This universal standard UIUX design concept expired long time ago, it expired the day touch displays and smartphones became widely adopted. That day the quest for a new universal standard UIUX design for these three industries should have started.

The current universal standard has never been a good user experience. As years passed people just accepted it as if life is meant to be like this and that there is nothing we can do about it.

Some of the problems with the current UIUX standard:

  • Not minimalist
  • Inconsistent
  • High cognitive load
  • Many are not inclusive.
  • Not-multiplatform compatible
  • Not Multi-industry compatible.
  • Users confused, overwhelmed, avoiding the machines.

Back then, when this UIUX standard was adopted, smartphones and touch displays did not yet exist. So multi-facet UIUX design was the best option for machines that customers would interact with buttons. Now that smartphones and touch displays are everywhere is time to introduce a new universal standard UIUX design for self-service machines and mobile applications of financial, transportation and oil & gas institutions.

Sometimes we think that the things that work and get the job done don't need to be fixed or replaced. This believe is wrong, we should always be trying to innovate to make things better.

The new standard

After closely observing the pain problems with the current standard we can be 95% certain that the next universal standard adopted by financial, transportation and oil & gas institutions is going to be single facet multi-platform consistent UIUX designs.

A new universal standard should of course innovate the current standard. Innovation is about making things easy to learn, simple to use, reducing number steps to achieve a goal etc.

In order to create a new universal standard UIUX design for universal devices such as ATMs, ticket vending machines and gas pumps I searched for products that are universal and have universal UIUX designs that are very simple.

The perfect product I found was the calculator. The calculator is a universal product, it is easy to learn how to use, it is inclusive, it is consistent, it is minimalist. Kids and seniors have no problem using it. The calculator also happens to be a hand held product which means that mobile applications could also make use of this design therefore making possible providing a multi-platform consistent experience to customers.

What makes the calculator such a user friendly device is its single facet design which does not requires customers to progress through multiple screens or scroll or swipe to get what they need. It also enables users to, with a quick glance, see where the journey of submitting an order begins and ends. This eliminates uncertainty of not knowing what is next from the user experience. The arrangement of elements in the calculator is universal because it any other arrangement wouldn’t make sense.

The user experience of the calculator is a proven user experience, it is used and loved by hundreds of millions of people on a daily basis. This means it is safe to bring the attributes that make the calculator one of the greatest UIUX designs everto self-service machines and mobile applications of financial, transportation and oil & gas institutions.

If we bring the user experience of the calculator to self-service machines and mobile application of financial, transportation and oil & gas institutions it will look like this:

(This design, like the calculator, is a design that defies Hicks Law. The advantages of a single facet design greatly overcome the disadvantages of defying Hicks Law.)

ATM machine

Ticket Machine

Gas pump

These are UIUX designs that, like calculator, are easy to learn, easy to use and easy to remember because they are single faceted. The user is never required to progress through multiple screens to get what they need. Because, with just a simple glance, the user can always see where the journey begins and end this designs don’t make user feel anxiety of not knowing what is next. These are single facet multi platform consistent UIUX designs with linear flow user experience.

Also with these designs multi platform consistency is finally possible. The experience at the machine and in the mobile application is 97% consistent.

Financial

Transportation

Oil & Gas

The Three Sisters

Financial, transportation and oil & gas institutions need to adopt a new UIUX design as the universal standard because the current one is outdated. The needs of consumers demand this new standard to be multi-platform consistent. This new standard also needs to be easy to learn, easy to use and easy to remember.

Ultimate Machine Ui is portfolio of 200+ single facet multi-platform consistent UIUX design for self-service machines and mobile applications of these institutions.

This is the solution I’m proposing as the universal standard UIUX design for financial transportation and oil & gas institutions.
