7 things you’ll ask about car parking at uni

  1. I’m living in halls on campus can I bring my car?

What do you need a car for? Everything you need is here!

We have a limited number of residential parking permits (110 to be precise!).

Priority for these is given to blue badge holders, those registered with ASSIST and students whose course includes official placements.

2. I’m living in St John’s — what about me?!

There’s no student parking at St John’s (pretty standard for halls within towns) but as you’re in the centre there are plenty of public transport links so you won’t need one anyway! Trust us, it’s much quicker to jump on a bus than try and battle rush-hour traffic.

If you’re desperate to bring a car you can apply for a residential parking permit via Northampton Borough Council. Please note — you won’t be able to park on either campus.

3. I’m commuting into Uni, will I be guaranteed a parking space?

For campus parking you’ll need to apply for a barrier card to gain access to the car parks but be warned, you won’t always get a space as parking is limited — that’s why we recommend using public transport or car-sharing where possible.

4. Can’t I just squeeze my car in on the verge?

Nooooooooooooo!

If you’re not parked in a designated space or you’ve parked inconsiderately you may get a penalty charge. Not only that, you may block access for emergency vehicles.

Just because you see another car parking in a silly way does not mean you can get away with it. Sorry!

5. How do I apply for a permit and how much does it cost?

You’ll get an email letting you know when you can apply.

Non-residential — one off £5 admin fee

Residential — £50 per term

6. So what’s available if I don’t bring a car?

So much!

We support Uno bus services 19 and 21 which means that students can travel free on these between Park Campus, Avenue Campus and Barrack Road (Mon-Fri). Just show your student ID card as you get on.

If two wheels is more your thing we’ve got over 350 cycle spaces across both campuses. Or, if you don’t fancy bringing your own bike you can hire one from Cycle CoNNect.

Northampton is a bike-heavy town so you won’t be alone if you decide to get to Uni that way.

7. What happens when we move to Waterside?

It will be even easier to get to Uni!

As we’ll be close to town, we’ll be asking students to use the extensive public transport network to get to and from campus. Parking spaces will be available to blue badge holders.

Got a question about Waterside then email: waterside@northampton.ac.uk
