A lot of the frightening things bicyclists do, we do because we’re conditioned to to constantly trying to escape getting hit by cars. It’s human nature to be more aware of those things that can kill you. So, we’re caught in the middle, in terms of protecting ourselves and being considerate to pedestrians. I’ve also noticed that in places with calmer, law-abiding auto traffic — such as in Sweden—the bicyclists generally are more conscious of pedestrian interaction, and pedestrians also obey the rules. I might not be able to prove this, but I sense that the chain of dependencies begins with motorist behavior.
