Time to wear sustainability on your feet or what?
Yes, indeed its high time. This story talks about how unfocused yet interesting my search took me to. A very typical day begins, I only look through the first 5 stories on my insta handle and luckily this was one . There is this cool journalist I follow who posted about sneakers she was wearing and tagged lane eight saying this brand uses soles made from algae that is saving about 31 liters of water per pair. This blew my mind; ‘what algae the green thing? ‘, ‘The green moss thing, floating thing, which was called a living organism, oh single celled oh that was amoeba, OK I think I should just google!’. And so, I started researching on algae made shoe soles which took to me algae tech-farming. Now little was I aware that a bio-fuel can be produced from algae. The algae the green mossy thing we find on stones and in lakes, yes.
Algae cultivation called algaculture. Algae is harvested in large quantities to produce biomass which has numerous commercial and industrial applications. Water , sunlight , carbon dioxide , some minerals and a controlled temperature is what this cultivation needs which India has. The Biomass can actually be fed to animals and even people as it apparently has a very high value in protein as omega 3 fatty acids or protein pills . People also use it to extract oil, a bio-fuel, that can be fed to cars as well if promoted by automobile industries.
Countries can become fuel independent and that too sustainably. Anyway, politically getting a push for bio-fuel production commercially in India will never happen I guess, but it could always be used for powering in electricity, making fuel cells that could be used for electric cars?
Algae based resins are today used by industries which supply foams to footwear brands and that is what Lane eight uses . By the way they look really cool and affordable. Adidas and Nike have pledged to go sustainable and I believe they have few out there now. The research on this is about 20 years old and the technology is far advanced for the big money guys to simply adopt here in India. May be its coming. I mean this made me feel fantastic, just because I felt enlightened with new info. Yes, so this was an interesting find for a rather routine day , huh?
