ON GDPR AND BLOCKCHAIN

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and blockchain: a paradox? Can a company be GDPR compliant while employing blockchain technology?

These are the questions percolating as the regulation, which will profoundly affect European privacy law, enters into force on May 25, 2018. Under the new rules, a company must comply with an EU citizens’ request to delete their personal data, regarded as “the right to be forgotten”.

However, by nature, transactions on a blockchain aren’t meant to be deleted but recorded permanently.
