The Swedish food company Protos and Volta Greentech are scaling up their long-standing collaboration with methane-reducing feed additives, with the ambition to make Smak av Gotland the most climate-friendly choice of beef on the retail market in Sweden.

The feed additive, Lome™, which reduces cow methane emissions by an average of 80% per day of feeding, will be fed to cows on the Gotland farms that Protos collaborates with. The project is starting in 2026.

After 3 years of collaboration and several pilot projects, Protos and Volta Greentech are taking the next step to scale up commercialisation of Lome™. In a letter of intent, Protos has committed to start to feed Lome™ to cattle in its supply chain. The effort will reach supermarket shelves under Protos’ brand Smak av Gotland.

“It feels fantastic that we have taken this step with Volta Greentech to scale up and offer a very unique consumer offering through Smak av Gotland,” says Linda Ahlmalm, CCO at Protos.

Lome™ additives are developed to reduce the climate impact of cows on the planet. Lome™ stands for Low methane, because feeding this additive leads to a significant reduction of methane, the gas that has made cattle notorious from a climate perspective. Given the methane produced by cows is responsible for ~50% of the climate impact of beef, Lome™ is an initiative that will propel Protos far ahead in offering the most climate-friendly beef on the market.

“Our consumers choose us today because of our regional concept Smak av Gotland, which gets a unique flavor profile from the Gotland nature. With Volta Greentech and Lome™, we can now also offer consumers the market’s most climate-friendly meat, which we think is exciting,” says Linda Ahlmalm.

By funding feed additives to directly reduce methane emissions from cows, Protos and Volta Greentech have demonstrated a new business model for reducing emissions in the production chain.

Protos and Volta Greentech are committed to being fully transparent on methane reduction during this project. This involves rigorous data collection, following strict emission accounting standards, and third-party verification of results. This commitment has already been shown in past projects, where all data was shared publicly and verified independently by RISE.

“We are confident that methane-reducing feed additives will become an industry standard. This is needed for Sweden to reduce emissions from agriculture and achieve climate goals. Protos has truly taken on a leadership role and is showing the way for the industry,” says Fredrik Åkerman, CEO of Volta Greentech.

Facts about Methane Gas
Methane released from enteric fermentation in cattle accounts for 5.7% of Sweden’s total greenhouse gas emissions and constitutes the majority of Sweden’s methane emissions. Reducing methane emissions from cattle is an important problem to tackle in order to achieve climate goals and to reduce the climate impact of beef.
