Unlocking artistic potential and developing a new media experience

For the average person, it seems anyone can bring their stories to life through a Youtube video, film production, or writing publication. However, within the media industry, artistic expression and creative freedom are at the mercy of corporate business. In this professional world it isn’t until you talk with artists, that you discover the censorship they face from streaming platforms and finance facilities.

In many cases, the censorship occurs before the camera even rolls. With director scripts, storyboards, and advertising programs being drastically influenced by the narratives of investors and production houses. Take for example, the censorship of Andrew Schulz, who was pressured by Netflix to remove parts of his comedy routine due to sensitive topics. In the end, he bought the rights and published the act himself, but rarely can artists afford to purchase such freedoms.

If artists are forced to adjust their creativity to match the agenda of the corporate entities– what does that mean for the development of these industries? Or what about the next Spielberg, Tarantino, or Coppola who is trying to find their place and push the envelope of the industry? With a simple Google search of “Hollywood Censorship” it seems the cases are growing and artists are getting fed up.

So How does WEB3 come into play?

At Vabble, we know the narrative is changing and we plan to be at the forefront of its advancement — providing a platform where artists can not only publish without censorship, but finance their productions and retain their IP rights. We see Web3 and blockchain technology as a solution that offers unmatched creative opportunities while untethering the artist from corporations trying to own their content.

This movement has taken place organically in the #Film3 industry over the past several years and more recently with financing opportunities through NFTs. For example: Calladita by Miguel Faus, Verified by Haleek Maul, The Deadheads animated series, or the multiverse built by The Fringe.

These projects give artists the ability to express themselves without censorship and offer a new experience for fans. With BTS access to the production, a share of the profits, or a seat at the creative table, fans can engage with artists like they never have before. This has led to a new media experience called Interactive Storytelling.

This shift was best described by Rob McElhenney in the TikTok video published by Adimverse. In summary, Rob describes that he is no longer interested in just producing another show or film, but rather wants to invest in an interactive storytelling experience. He sees the future of the industry coalescing into a metaverse with gaming, social media, and community building components. The narrative is shifting from just consuming content, to sharing the experience with others. While no one can predict when this change will occur, the #Film3 movement is pushing towards this goal each day.

For example, we have seen projects create a bridge between Web2 and Web3 to make the transition easier. Like the Deadfellaz community, which at NFT NYC created a surreal in-person art performance that highlighted their NFT collection. This displayed the power of digital communities providing tangible IRL events. Or, another example, the media metaverse built by Isekai Meta. Following their NFT drop they released interactive lore through “faction wars” and community events involving the NFT characters, bridging into their anime studio and film productions. Essentially what these projects have done is give power to artists, directors, and community members to create stories together — completely redefining what it means to produce content.

We see this progress as the restoration of creative freedoms and the development of a new media experience. We are unsure what the future will look like, but we believe a vibrant metaverse and community aspect will be at the centre of the content experience.
