First Virginia incident of Zika virus in Harrisonburg
Heather Baker, a Harrisonburg mother of three children, believes she contracted the Zika virus while on a missions trip to Guatemala. She experienced a swollen lymph node on the side of her head which progressed to joint pain, a rash and body aches. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a letter on Feb. 1 confirming the virus.
Accidental lottery ticket wins 7 million
Lottery retailer Michael Donnelly of Woodbridge, Virginia, bought a Cash4Life ticket out of his own money after accidentally ringing up the ticket for a customer who ordered a Powerball ticket. He didn’t find out until days after the Jan. 7 drawing that his mistake had won him $1,000 per day for life or an instant $7 million. Donnelly chose the $7 million, according to the Virginia Lottery, and the Harris-Teeter that sold the winning ticket was rewarded with $50,000.
Murdered teen’s friend claims reporting to Blacksburg school; school denies
Kari Cook, friend of murdered Nicole Lovell, says she reported Lovell’s contact with an adult man to a Blacksburg Middle School official after viewing photos of the man and messages Lowell had been exchanging with him. However, the online name Cook gave authorities did not match that of Virginia Tech David Eisenhauer, who has been charged with her murder. The school stated that no student had approached them about the situation.
