Residing in Westbury, NY, Valerie Varnuska loves exploring new places. Two of Valerie Varnuska’s favorite hobbies are walking and spending time in nature.

Scientific research suggests that nature walks can actually reduce stress. According to a 2014 study from the University of Michigan, taking a group walk through nature provides a number of positive mental health benefits, including heightened states of well-being and lower levels of depression and stress. The study found that the impact was strongest on those who recently endured a traumatic experience.

A separate study found similar results when comparing people in a forest to people in a city. Those in the forest had lower heart rates and decreased levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress.

Conversely, studies show that people who do not get enough time in nature, such as those who live in big cities, often display higher risks of depression, anxiety, and mental illness. So the next time you’re feeling down, consider spending some time in nature.
