Notes: Let me start off by saying I love this teaser. Aside from the few shots of Ben Affleck as Batman this is the best look we got of the character. Starting off with black over different sound bites really helped prepare me for the dark tone of the film. In Director Zack Snyder’s last film, he set up the tone and the theme of Superman being an outsider but this teaser really cemented it.
Every time we get a “new” shot, whether it’s the Superman statue, Superman lifting the truck, or the kneeling guards it’s always brought in with a hard cut. We’re being conditioned to see what’s new hit us in a flash and things we’re familiar with fades. After we see the statue the shots after fade in. Ben Affleck, who we know is Batman fades in. The editing reveals what we know, but hits us with what we’re not expecting in an instant. This is a great reveal for the Batman suit.
The teaser lives up to it’s name, never showing any fighting or action between the two title characters.
The reveal of the logo is well done. The bright red Superman logo appears alone but turns desaturated as the batman logo appears from behind. It feels like the presence of Batman makes Superman’s world a bit darker, which is how it should be.
