The process of screening candidates for jobs is badly broken, mostly because it’s based on credentials — the stuff everyone lists on their resume, such as degrees, years of experience, employer names, awards, accomplishments, and so forth. When candidates apply for a job, employers use these credentials to determine whether or not someone moves to the next step or is rejected outright.

Now consider this: no matter how well someone might be able to do the job, it doesn’t mean they’ll even be considered for the job. Why? Because of the tyranny of credentials.

While a resume may show what someone has done in previous positions, none of it proves what she can do in this next one. Resumes also can’t show self-taught skills, resilience, curiosity, self-reliance, collaboration, or any of the other “soft skills” that employers now recognize as critical to success on the job. …
