I started working in tech when I was 23. I guess I was “The Cool Girl” but as much as it was to do with the hyper social tech scene around Old Street, it was also to do with my age, the UK drinking culture and moving to a big city.

I started running networking events and became responsible for creating a welcoming environment. Now when I hear something that’s not ok, I address it clearly and straight away, often using the simple phrase “that’s inappropriate”. I try to avoid blame, anger and aggression and I try to open up the conversation about why it’s not ok and how that affects people.

Not everyone will be confident enough to do this but I urge those that are — female or male — to give it a go. It doesn’t always work (some people are just pricks) but I’ve had people thank me because it leaves everyone (not just the one being told off) with something to think about, to improve upon, rather than ending the conversation with a bitter taste.
