Stop Playing The Blame Game: Mona Scott-Young
“Mona Scott-Young is the devil” — Charlamagne (@cthgod)
That’s a quote that Charlamagne of the Breakfast Club says regularly on the show when referring to Mona. If you’re not familiar with who Mona Scott-Young is, she’s been in the entertainment business for decades.
I first heard about who Mona was through her work with Missy and Violator Management. If I’m not mistaken, the first television show she produced was ‘The Road to Stardom with Missy Elliott’. It was a pretty dope show that had artists compete to go on tour with Missy, or something like that. She’s done other specials for television but the next biggest show produced by Mona was the Love and Hip Hop series, which debuted in 2011 (damn time flies).
If you’ve never seen Love and Hip Hop, let me sum it up for you. The show follows a number of women who have relationships with men (or women) in the music industry or vice versa. This isn’t always the case with every season but you get the idea. Is Love and Hip Hop real? Not really. Real life doesn’t wait until you have the right lighting so you can confront someone and potentially fight them. So yes, this show is “produced” but you should know that already. The only thing though is the characters are playing themselves in this “docu-drama” or reality show.
The cast members, if they’re smart, can translate their time on the show into profits in other areas. For others, they end up looking like a clown for the amusement to those who watch the show. Some leave the show and drop off the face of the earth to never be heard of or seen again. Each cast member is different. Some people think the show puts African Americans in a bad light but the show continues to draw in huge ratings. So, who’s to blame for “making us look bad”? Mona Scott, VH1 or Viacom?
Why is L&HH still on the air? It’s because people keep watching. So I ask, who’s to blame. Why do I consistently see people blaming Mona Scott-Young for how others act on a show she Executive Produces? Not sure if Mona owns a gun but she’s never been accused of signing someone on the show by gunpoint. Why do people continue to point the blame when Mona isn’t the problem.
Before ‘The Real World’, studios had to produce scripted shows for television. That means you had to hire a team writers and others to make that show happen. Today you can produce a reality show for a fraction of the cost and get the same ad revenues as you would for a scripted show. Is L&HH great television? Ha, the answer to that question depends on who you ask but I can tell you one thing… It’s television that makes “cents” and by no way I’m I defending this type of programming. I’m just trying to put it in perspective on who you should blame.
This might be a bad example but many people blame President Obama for local issues… Ok, that was bad. But do you get my point? I don’t know Mona personally but I know that she’s doing something that most business owners do. Quench the thirst of an audience. If she’s not producing this type of show, someone else will. So the next time you blame someone for programming you see on television, really think hard on who’s really to blame.
