A friend who has since passed away said that in the 1960s women would come into his practice — he was a doctor — and would ask for “help” with pregnancy. You see, back then when abortion was not an option, doctors would sometimes find a “medical” reason to terminate an early pregnancy.

He said when that happened, “I would put on my most serious doctor face,” and wow could he do that, “and give them a lecture about keeping a baby.” As he spoke he grew quiet and then got this serious look and then added. “I watched those kids grow up under some terrible conditions . . .” He said no more but from his face I suspected he might have reconsidered his stance in those days.
