Catch 22 for trans youth
There is a Catch 22 that really puts people under 18 years of age in the middle. In very few jurisdictions and places (the Netherlands may be an exception where the age of consent is 16) a person must be 18 years of age or older the get gender confirmation surgery. With surgery sometimes the person can gain access to the facilities of the gender they affirm, but since they cannot by law get that surgery, they are precluded by another law from getting equal protection. It’s not like he wants to drive, drink intoxicating beverages, or vote and is underage. His peers all can enter spaces consistent with their gender, but he can’t and the law prevents him from getting that help, even if he wanted to, which in my view should not be a requirement. Blind, deaf, and disabled people have accommodations made for them. Other than raw prejudice, I am at a loss as to why he is being singled out when others are not.
