Wasn’t it Armistead Maupin who said that many of us in the 1970s had to “find our families” within the movement? It was not unknown that LGBTQ youth and adults would be disowned for being who they were. This is very corrosive to anyone whatever at any age.

Happily people are deciding they do love their children and society is realizing protecting LGBTQ youth is morally and economically right.

Following coming out I had a whole new family I never knew existed. What a joy it would have been to share these friends with the people I knew from before who disappeared.

We still have institutional bullying of all LGBTQ youth but we also have allies and voices of reason.
