Investigative journalists discovered late last year that clusters of these sites (a few dozen at a time) are owned and operated by the same people or groups of people. They freely link with each other, which creates some of the nodal aggregation effect.

They’re definitely good at SEO. Better than spammers, in a lot of ways.
